2009-06-09 08:00:00 CEST 2009-06-09 08:00:22 CEST REGULATED INFORMATION Finnair Oyj - Company AnnouncementDECLINE IN TRAFFIC CONTINUES, CAPACITY CUTS TRACK FALL IN DEMANDFINNAIR OYJ STOCK EXCHANGE RELEASE 9 JUNE 2009 AT 09:00 In May Finnair's traffic declined by 11 per cent from the previous year. Scheduled traffic in May was 9.8 per cent lower than in 2008. Asian traffic declined by 10.8 per cent and North American traffic by 7.0 per cent. European traffic was 8.0 per cent lower and domestic traffic 13.9 per cent lower. In Cargo the fall in demand was sharper than in recent months and in May cargo volume declined by 28 per cent. Due to the fall in demand, Finnair has cut its capacity significantly in all types of traffic. Capacity has been cut in domestic traffic by more than a quarter, in leisure traffic by a fifth and in Asian traffic by more than 17 per cent. Owing to the capacity cuts, passenger load factors improved from last year, but are still below the long-term average. “We have succeeded in adjusting capacity better than last year. There is still space on aircraft, however, and flight ticket prices are low. Unit revenue for scheduled passenger traffic has continued to fall steeply throughout the early part of the year,” says Finnair SVP Communications Christer Haglund. Leisure traffic volume declined as expected from the previous month and was 16.8 per cent lower in May. In April, leisure traffic grew due to the Thailand season continuing for longer than the previous year. Of Finnair's flights, 92.2 per cent arrived on schedule, which represents an improvement of 7.2 percentage points from last year. The scheduled passenger traffic punctuality percentage rose from April last year by 6.8 percentage points to 93.4 per cent.
