In January-August the sales totalled €5,665.1 million (excluding VAT), which is down by 13.3%. In the food trade, sales in August were €326.6 million, an increase of 6.3%. Sales to the K-food store chains were up by 9.8%. In the home and speciality goods trade, sales in August were €130.4 million, down by 6.8%. The sales of household goods developed best. Home technology and furniture sales decreased over the previous year. In the building and home improvement trade, sales in August were €207.5 million, a decrease of 22.1%. Sales in Finland were down by 19.5%, which can, above all, be attributed to the decrease in B-to-B sales and in the sales of agricultural supplies. In foreign countries, sales decreased by 24.0% in terms of euros, and by 17.3% in terms of local currencies. In the Baltic countries, sales were down by 38.6%. In Russia, sales dropped by 24.3% in terms of euros, and by 6.0% in terms of the local currency. In the car and machinery trade, VV-Auto's sales in August were €38.0 million, which is down by 43.0% compared with the previous year. In addition to the market downturn in the car trade, the sales performance was affected by the car tax act which came into force in April, because of which car tax levied on cars after 1 April 2009 is not included in sales figures. In Finland, new registrations of passenger cars dropped by 35.5% in August. Konekesko's sales in August were €29.0 million, down by 30.6%. Sales decreased by 32.0% in Finland and by 29.2% abroad. Change, % indicates the change over the corresponding period of the previous year. In August 2009, the number of selling days in Kesko's wholesale was 21, which is the same as in August 2008. The total number of selling days in January-August was three less than in the previous year. The number of retail selling days in August was 31, which is the same as in the previous year. The total number of retail selling days in January-August was four less than in the previous year.
