Reasons for the strong decline in sales were, besides the downturn in the economy, the extremely strong sales increase in the month of comparison February 2008, the devaluation of the Swedish krona, the Norwegian krone and the Russian rouble and the fact that there was one trading day less in 2009 compared to the leap year 2008. In February 2008, the Stockmann Group's sales increased by 58 per cent; e.g. department store sales grew by 42 per cent in the Baltic countries and by 33 per cent in Russia. In February 2009, the Department Store Division's sales declined by 20 per cent, 13 per cent in Finland and 37 per cent abroad. In the department stores in Russia, like-for-like rouble-nominated sales decreased by 2 per cent. The euro-nominated aggregate sales declined by 44 per cent. The closing down of the Smolenskaya department store in May 2008 due to the illegal action of the lessors still affects comparison. On 13 February, a new department store was opened in the Metropolis shopping centre in Moscow. Sales declined considerably in the Baltic department stores, compared to the high sales figures in 2008. Lindex's sales declined by 4 per cent in local currencies while the division's euro-nominated sales decreased by 18 per cent. Sales declined by 13 per cent in Finland and by 19 per cent abroad. Seppälä's euro-nominated sales declined by 7 per cent, 5 per cent in Finland and 12 per cent abroad. In Russia, Seppälä's rouble-nominated sales increased by 19 per cent. Sales of Hobby Hall declined by 15 per cent, 10 per cent in Finland and 37 per cent abroad.
