Traffic Performance December 2011

In 2011, Finnair traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres rose by
approximately 11.8 per cent as the overall capacity grew by 16.8 per cent
compared with full year 2010. Asian traffic capacity measured in Available Seat
Kilometres grew by 27.8 per cent and traffic measured in Revenue Passenger
Kilometres increased by 17.6 per cent, mainly as a result of the Singapore
route launch in May. 

In December 2010 Finnair traffic performance was affected by a cabin crew
strike that halted the traffic for over a week. 

 “Package tour market in Finland suffered from overcapacity and consequently
the load factor in leisure traffic declined significantly in December year on
year,” says Finnair CFO Erno Hildén. “Global economic uncertainty softened also
the demand in Asian traffic. However, overall load factor for December was flat
compared to December 2010 as the load factors in European and Domestic traffic
improved notably year on year.” 

In December, Revenue per Available Seat Kilometre (RASK) improved by 6.2 per
cent compared with the exceptional corresponding period in 2010. The unit
revenue (RASK) was 5.07 c. 

In leisure traffic the load factor for the full year remained close to flat. In
December, the load factor declined by nearly 4 per cent year on year. The full
year capacity decrease results mainly from the fact that from the beginning of
the summer season, some of the previous leisure flights have been operated as
scheduled services. The overall capacity of these flights has not changed
substantially from last year. 

 In cargo, available tonne kilometres for 2011 grew by 34.5 per cent and
revenue tonne kilometres by 19.9 per cent year on year. The amount of cargo and
mail carried grew by 18.5 per cent. The overall load factor was 64.8 per cent,
declining nearly 8 per cent year on year due to overcapacity in the industry. 

The arrival punctuality of Finnair flights in 2011 improved year on year: 85.1
per cent (80.8 per cent) of all flights arrived on schedule. In scheduled
traffic, 86.4 per cent (82.2 per cent) of flights arrived on schedule. The
arrival punctuality in December was satisfactory: 81.4 per cent (57.6 per cent)
of all flights arrived on schedule. In December 2010 arrival punctuality was
affected by a cabin crew strike.
